Antiaging

In humans, the eternal pursuit will always be the delay of aging. The new technology in the field of dermatology ensures that our appearance is for as long as youthful.

The prevailing theory that explains aging at the cellular level is that of oxidative stress. That is, the free radicals that are produced as metabolism products but also by external attacks (sun, pollution, smoking, etc.) "stress" the cells by destroying their structures (DNA, proteins, lipids). The body is therefore called upon to constantly repair damage, to replace its worn materials.

Aging therefore depends on 1) endogenous factors, i.e. heredity, as the resistance to wear and tear (that depends on how good repair system we have) is a matter of genes and 2) exogenous factors, i.e. how much we expose ourselves to an environment that is unfavorable to our cells. As for the skin, its main enemy is the sun (ultraviolet radiation (UV)), while smoking, alcohol, poor diet and the lack of exercise also accelerate aging as well.

But how can we slow down the aging process and prolong the period of youth and vigor? Especially for the skin, what could we do to keep it youthful as much as possible?

The modern view of anti-aging supports the holistic treatment of the body by many specialties since diet, hormones, exercise and psychology (mood) play an important role. General guidelines for a healthy lifestyle by avoiding exogenous harmful factors and with frequent exercise definitely help. The treatment of osteoporosis and depression as well as the use of dietary supplements or hormones where are needed help to maintain youth.

Especially for the skin, modern dermatology offers as ‘weapons’, treatments that target at different levels and favor the ability to regenerate its components.

Peelings with fruit acids (AHA’s), with TCA (Trichloroacetic acid) and LHAs (Lipohydroxy acids) are the most common peelings that are applied in clinics. These are superficial or medium- depth peelings that aim at the removal of a part or all of the skin and promote the production of new cells. They are well tolerated by almost all skin types and improve acne (AHA’s) and skin discolorations (TCA). The exposure to sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is a contraindication to these treatments, which are applied mainly in winter.

Equivalent to peelings is microdermabrassion whose exfoliation is caused by the release of microcrystals.

Mesotherapy, a technique that has been used for many years in abroad, is an important anti-aging ‘weapon’. It is about a technique in which vitamins, minerals, salts, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid are inserted into the skin with multiple stings through a special fine needle. This creates the ideal environment for skin cells to regenerate. It takes 6-8 sessions every 7-10 days and several repetitions can be applied. The exposure to sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is not a contraindication to this treatment.

Photorejuvenation is a skin treatment that uses lasers that target deeper into the underlying skin that is called dermis. They activate fibroblasts to produce collagen, thus promoting skin tightening. They are ideally combined with skin superficial treatments (mesotherapy or peelings).

There are many types of lasers such as Nd:yaG, erbium and fractional lasers, as well as the IPL system and radio frequencies (Thermage) that make photorejuvenation. Repeat treatments are required depending on the type of system is used. Some systems require photoprotection.

Finally, the correction of wrinkles with hyaluronic acid or Botox helps so that the wrinkles do not deepen over time and give an extra immediate youthful look. Botox needs to be repeated every 4-6 months and the hyaluronic acid fillers every 6-8 months. It should be noted that hyaluronic acid is the only filler that since it is completely absorbed by the body is very safe and does not cause granulomas. The exposure to sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is not a contraindication to these treatments.

It is mandatory to protect the skin from the sun throughout the year to achieve better results. Combination treatments have the best outcome and especially when combined with the antiaging routine.
